Your Rights as a Carer

From 1 April 2018, carers in Scotland have new rights. The Carers (Scotland) Act is a law which is intended to recognise the valuable role that carers play in supporting people with care needs as a result of their illness, condition or disability. 

Local authorities have duties to support carers who have needs that meet the local eligibility criteria, to provide information and advice service, to involve carers in discharge from hospital and in the assessment of cared-for person, to publish a Short Break Services Statment setting out what breaks are available in your area and to prepare a local carer strategy with the relevant local authority.
